Kevin Feige on introducing Ms. Marvel and The Eternals to the Marvel Cinematic Universe

February 26, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Although Marvel isn’t planning on announcing its Phase Four plans until after the release of this year’s Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Homecoming, the expectation is that we can expect a very different MCU over the next few years as old favourites move on and new characters emerge.

One hero who is expected to play a role in future movies is Kamala Khan, a.k.a. Ms. Marvel, with Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige previously teasing that “we have plans for [Ms. Marvel] once we introduce Captain Marvel to the world” and Captain Marvel star Brie Larson recently namedropping the character as one she’d like to see appearing in the inevitable sequel.

Speaking to Comic Book, Feige was asked about Ms. Marvel, and whether there was any thought given to introducing her in Captain Marvel, responding that: “No, I think she’s a contemporary story. I don’t think she was a little kid in 1990. I’m not sure she was born in 1995. This is the first step towards introducing her hero is how you begin to bring her about at some point.”

While we’re unsure as to when Ms. Marvel will make her entrance to the MCU, we do know that Marvel is planning on introducing a brand new team in Phase Four with the release of an Eternals movie, and Feige has also been chatting to Collider about those characters and how they plan to introduce them as an ensemble much like Guardians of the Galaxy.

Eternals are one group, but we like the idea of introducing an ensemble, doing an ensemble movie from the start, as opposed to building up as we did with the first Avengers. More like Guardians, not tonally, but in terms of introducing a new group of people. You were asking about ’60s, and ’70s before. Jack Kirby did an immense, amazing epic with Eternals that spans tens of thousands of years, and that’s also something we haven’t really done, which is why that among many other things post-Endgame, we find appealing.”

The Eternals is set to be directed by Chloe Zhao (The Rider) and will reportedly start production later this year ahead of a 2020 release (where it is said to be joined by the long-awaited Black Widow solo movie).
