Following hot on the heels of this week’s news that Mel Brooks, Rick Moranis and Bill Pullman are set to return to the world of Spaceballs for the long-awaited sequel to the classic 1987 spoof, we now have word that the latter’s son Lewis Pullman is also in negotiations to join the cast.
As per THR, Top Gun Maverick and Thunderbolts* star Lewis is set to portray the character of Starburst, the son of Bill’s Lone Starr and Daphne Zuniga’s now-Queen Vespa (Zuniga is also expect to reprise her role). Starbust will be one of three leads alongside newly-announced Keke Palmer as Destiny, and co-writer and producer Josh Gad in an as-yet-unconfirmed role (Barf Jr?).
The Spaceballs sequel – potentially titled Spaceballs: The Schwartz Awakens, as per Mel Brooks’ announcement video – is being directed by Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar) and while plot details are being kept under wraps, the Amazon MGM press release describes it as “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.”
As well as reprising the role of Yogurt, original Spaceballs director Mel Brooks will also produce alongside Gad, Greenbaum and Imagine’s Ron Howard and Brian Grazer. The film is being produced by Amazon MGM, and is said to be targeting a theatrical release in 2027.
