Mark Hamill thought any former Star Wars stars who were available should return for The Rise of Skywalker

December 18, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Mark Hamill, one of the stars of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, really wanted former stars of the saga to return for the film.

With Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker just around the corner, soon fans will get to see yet another of the Original Trilogy’s stars return to the saga. Billy Dee Williams is back as Lando and this is much to the delight of Mark Hamill.

Speaking in a video interview (below), the Luke Skywalker actor talked about how he wanted former stars of the saga to return for one last movie: “I’m so glad Billy Dee is in the final installment, because he deserves it. I thought, ‘Anybody that’s still around — no matter how prominent or obscure — should come back. I would love that. But especially Billy Dee. We were unknowns when we were cast, and when they cast Billy Dee in Empire, he was like a big movie star! He’s just the smoothest [person]. He’s almost like an old school, 1930’s matinee idol. He’s just a really wonderful guy and fun to be around. And he saved my life in Empire, so I owe him that.”

It’s certainly going to be fun to see Lando back in the mix and interesting to see what role the character ends up playing in the climatic events. Perhaps there will also be some other characters returning for Episode IX. Fingers crossed for some surprise appearances!

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker sees J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) directing a cast that includes Star Wars veterans Daisy Ridley (Rey), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico), Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Greg Grunberg (Snap Wexley), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian), Ian McDiarmid (Emperor Palpatine) and Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa) as well as new additions Naomi Ackie (Lady Macbeth), Richard E. Grant (Logan), Dominic Monaghan (Lost), and Keri Russell (The Americans).
