Have you recovered from the news that Spider-Man has joined the ranks of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a deal between Marvel and Sony? Well, someone who might be quite excited about the news is Mark Millar, the comic book writer behind Civil War, which is being adapted into Captain America: Civil War for next year. But what does he think they will change?
“They won’t have to change much, especially now they have Spider-Man,” he told IGN. “It’s funny though, people always keep saying to me that you can’t do Civil War without Spider-Man, but in the comics he’s only in 6 pages. What’s great about Spider-Man coming back, from someone who was baffled by the last two Spider-Man movies, is that this feels like Spider-Man coming home. It’s not like Marvel can do no wrong, I mean Thor: The Dark World wasn’t very good and Iron Man 2 wasn’t very good, they have their misfires. But Spider-Man is the holy grail for them. And all eyes are on them now.”
They also talk about casting comic book characters when writing, noting that he actually had a Morgan Freeman-like design for Nick Fury before he was changed to be more like Samuel L. Jackson in the Ultimates series. A decision that lead to Jackson asking to be part of the Marvel Universe.
“[Civil War] was a nightmare, it was the hardest thing I’ve ever written,” he admits. “I took no pleasure in writing it as I was, every month, tying in 40 books. And it’s hard enough to write as it is, but when you’re sending something to 40 different creative teams and saying, ‘okay I’m going to leave him here, so can you do something here for this month’ and everyone as messing up! The books were shipping late, you were giving away reveals too early. Honestly, it was a nightmare, it was like juggling gas.”
