Minions enjoys massive $115.2 million US opening; global total already at $395.7 million

July 13, 2015 by Scott J. Davis

A new number one entered the US box office chart this weekend with those loveable yellow Minions slaying everything in their path to sit atop the charts with a massive opening.

The prequel to Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2, Minions took an estimated $115.2 million in its opening weekend, the second-highest of all time for an animated movie, just behind the $122.5 million taken by Shrek The Third in 2007 and above the $110.3 million that Toy Story 3 grossed in 2010. That includes a Friday gross of $46.2 million, the highest grossing opening day ever for an animated film.

Minions’ international total now stands at a huge $280.5 million after a second weekend of around $124 million, bringing its two week total to $395.7 million worldwide. A third Despicable Me, or indeed a Minions sequel, is now surely guaranteed after another massive box-office haul.

In other new release news this weekend, Blumhouse and Entertainment 360’s The Gallows opened to around $10 million, good enough for fifth place, while Ryan Reynolds sci-fi thriller Self/less was less successful, opening ninth with $5.4 million. The film, which co-stars Ben Kingsley and Matthew Goode, was savaged by critics and cost $26 million to make.

Jurassic World continued to rake in the cash, with a fifth weekend gross of $18.1million pushing its US gross closer to the $600 million mark, a feat only ever achieved by three films: Avatar ($760.5 million), Titanic ($658.7 million) and The Avengers ($623.4 million). The Chris Pratt-starrer now stands at $590.7 million and $1.465 billion worldwide.

Pixar/Disney’s Inside Out continues to shine as well, with a fourth weekend gross of $17.1 million to bring its domestic total to $283.6 million. Overseas, the film has begun its slow rollout but has still managed to reach $435.4 million.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s return as The Terminator in Terminator Genisys continues its box-office struggles with a second weekend gross of just $13.7 million from 3,783 locations. Its domestic gross now stands at a paltry $68.7 million. Overseas the film is having slightly more success, with $47.3 million taken in this weekend for a global toal of $224.8 million. It remains to be seen if these numbers will be enough to warrant making the two reported sequels for the film.

Magic Mike took $9.6 million in its second weekend for a total of $48.4 million in the US, with a global haul of $68.9 million, healthy numbers for a film that reportedly only cost between $15-$20 million. Universal’s comedy sequel Ted 2 dropped 50% in its third weekend, earning $5.6 million to take its domestic total to $71.6 million and a $124.8 million global gross.
