New Avengers: Infinity War character, Han Solo cameo, new Blade Runner 2049 footage and more – Daily News Roundup

August 23, 2017 by Luke Owen

INFINITY WAR

Having been spotted on set in a motion capture suit, leading to speculation that he’s portraying the Black Order member Ebony Maw, Peaky Blinders actor Tom Vaughan-Lawlor has confirmed to Dublin Live that he is playing a villain in next year’s Avengers: Infinity War. “I am [in the film],” said Vaughan-Lawlor. “But it’s like I’m one of those ones where you go into a sentence to say something about it and hope you have a job at the end of the sentence. You sign so many documents and waivers and people ask you about it and you have to give the generic and boring ‘I can’t say too much about it’. But I am doing it and it’s really amazing and an amazing thing to be part of.” Read more here.

RETURN OF IVAN

It was announced earlier this year that Dolph Lundgren would be returning to the Rocky franchise as Ivan Drago in Creed 2, and during a break on Warner Bros. Aquaman the Russian boxer has revealed he’s begun training for the film. Read more here.

HAN SOLO RUMOURS

One for the speculation draw for the moment, but during an interview with Steele Wars podcast, a Pop! Vinyl figures, Funko employee revealed that their upcoming Star Wars line features “Emilia Clarke, Lupita Nyong’o, Woody Harrelson [and] Donald Glover”. With the Nyong’o addition to that list, one could assume that Maz Kanata from Star Wars: The Force Awakens should be making an appearance in the spin-off movie. Read more here.

YOU’RE OUR ONLY HOPE

After a dismal time at the U.S. box office and overseas territories, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets will be looking to its last remaining markets to give it any chance of being profitable. Valerian is set for release in China (the world’s second biggest market) on Friday and should give the film a notable bump at the box office. But even if Valerian performs exceptionally it will be tough for the film to break even – experts are saying that the film will need to gross $400 million globally to do so. Read more here.

2049 FOOTAGE

Sony Pictures released the first international TV spot for Blade Runner 2049 yesterday which features some previously unseen footage from Denis Villeneuve’s hotly-anticipated sci-fi sequel. Check it out here.

CONGRATS NOLAN

And we’ll end things off today with some congratulations to Christopher Nolan who has become the fifth highest grossing director of all-time, passing Ron Howard and James Cameron. This new total places Nolan behind Robert Zemeckis in fourth ($2,091 billion), Peter Jackson in third ($2,134 billion), Michael Bay in second ($2,326 billion), and Steven Spielberg way out in first ($4,45 million).
