Paramount finds new writer for G.I. Joe 3

July 2, 2014 by James Garcia

Paramount hopes to release G.I. Joe 3 in 2016, and have found a new writer to pen the screenplay. According to Variety, Shooter and Red Planet scribe Jonathan Lemkin has been brought on to write the next installment in the franchise.

We don’t have any plot details yet to share, though the film will likely revolve around Dwayne Johnson’s character Roadblock, who first appeared in last year’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation and became an audience favorite.

Previous reports suggested that this third installment would mix new and returning cast members, with the option for Channing Tatum to reprise his role as Duke (though he seemingly bit the dust early on in Retaliation). Lorenzo di Bonaventura will produce, and the studio will likely now focus on finding a director to replace Jon Chu, who dropped out in order to finish Jem and the Holograms and move on to his next project, Now You See Me 2.

G.I. Joe 3 is a priority for Paramount – which is unsurprising considering the last film’s $375 million box office take – so expect to hear news on a new director soon.
