Rian Johnson praises Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker as a “special experience”

February 11, 2020 by Samuel Brace

Rian Johnson, the director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi has heaped praise on The Rise of Skywalker, calling it a “special experience”.

The sequel trilogy is now over and the last entry, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, is on the tail end of its theatrical run. The film wasn’t received warmly by critics but fans have been much more keen, especially compared to the incredibly strong reactions to its predecessor The Last Jedi.

Director of The Last Jedi, Rian Johnson, who got a lot of heat from some of Star Wars’ more vocal and aggressive fans, has now come out in praise of J.J. Abrams’ The Rise of Skywalker – a film some suggest is a rebuke to Johnson’s own film. Speaking to MTV News, the director said:

“I had a blast, man. Made me so proud seeing the heart and soul that J.J. put into it. And seeing my friends who were in the movie just like, bring the whole thing to a conclusion. Yeah, for me as a Star Wars fan, it was a really special experience.”

Now that the Skywalker saga has come to an end, this next era of Star Wars movies is going to be fascinating to follow. There’s a chance that Rian Johnson will still be involved as his announced trilogy is technically still on the cards.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker sees J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) directing a cast that includes Star Wars veterans Daisy Ridley (Rey), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico), Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Greg Grunberg (Snap Wexley), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian), Ian McDiarmid (Emperor Palpatine) and Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa) as well as new additions Naomi Ackie (Lady Macbeth), Richard E. Grant (Logan), Dominic Monaghan (Lost), and Keri Russell (The Americans).
