Rogue One: A Star Wars Story enjoys a $290 million global opening weekend

December 18, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has pulled in a worldwide box office opening weekend of $290.5 million, which is at the lower end of the initial tracking suggesting a haul of anywhere between $280 and $300 million.

Domestically, Rogue One grossed $155 million across the Friday-Sunday period, the second biggest December opening in history behind last year’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens on $248 million.

In the international markets, the film didn’t quite manage to perform as well as many had anticipated, although it did open at number one in every market and pulled in $135.5 million in total. That’s the fourth-biggest international bow for December after The Force Awakens ($281 million), Avatar $164.5 million) and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey ($138 million).

“[We are] right where we wanted to be,” said Disney’s EVP of distribution Dave Hollis. “[Rogue One] did xactly what it needed to do as a litmus for the standalones going forward from a commercial and an artistic standpoint. It’s incredibly satisfying that it’s opened the way it has and gotten the reaction that it has despite pre-holiday distractions.”

From Lucasfilm comes the first of the Star Wars standalone films, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, an all-new epic adventure. In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is out now and features a cast that includes Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), Diego Luna (Milk), Ben Mendelsohn (The Dark Knight Rises), Donnie Yen (Ip Man), Jiang Wen (Let the Bullets Fly), Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland), Alan Tudyk (Con Man), Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler), Genevieve O’Reilly (Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith), Jimmy Smits (Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones), James Earl Jones (Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope), Valene Kane (The Fall), Alistair Petrie (The Night Manager), Warwick Davis (Star Wars: Episode IV – Return of the Jedi), Ian McElhinney (Game of Thrones) and Jonathan Aris (Sherlock).
