Ruby Rose says she left Batwoman as she was allergic to the mask

July 18, 2021 by Gary Collinson

It came as a shock back in 2019 when it was announced that Ruby Rose was leaving the title role in The CW’s Batwoman series after a single season, and while it was rumoured that her departure “wasn’t 100% her decision”, we never really got any official reason behind her exit.

Rose has previously suggested that the combination of a taxing schedule, a back injury, and the coronavirus pandemic all contributed to the decision, and now the Australian actress has revealed on KIIS The Kyle and Jackie O Show that she also discovered she was allergic to the latex costume – specifically the latex mask.

“I did find out that I was allergic to latex,” said Rose. “Unfortunately, my mask is latex. I was getting worse and worse, because as you get more contact with it, I guess you get more reactions. I took off the [mask] at the end, and my face was just hives. My throat was all messed up. It was like it was out of a scary movie.”

Rose was written out of the show after the first season, with Javicia Leslie taking over lead role duties as the newly-created character Ryan Wilder. Although Rose subsequently indicated that she was open to returning as Kate Kane, the role was ultimately recast during the second season with Krypton actress Wallis Day joining the show to finish off Kate’s story.

Season three of Batwoman sees Javicia Leslie’s Ryan Wilder continuing in the title role as the DC heroine, while the cast also includes Rachel Skarsten, Meagan Tandy, Nicole Kang, and Camrus Johnson. An early 2022 premiere date is expected.
