Rumour: Game of Thrones showrunners’ Star Wars films will be set during the Old Republic

March 23, 2019 by Gary Collinson

With the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones set to get underway next month, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will soon be swapping Westeros for the galaxy far, far away as they begin work on their series of Star Wars movies for Lucasfilm.

So far, we’ve heard nothing about their plans for the films, but if a new rumour from Star Wars News Net is to be believed, production is due to get underway this year, and they will take place an even longer time ago – the fan favourite Old Republic era, to be exact.

According to SWNN’s source, they were “approached about working on the next movie this Autumn. It is not the Rian Johnson trilogy, it is the Game of Thrones guys’ first movie, and it is set during the Old Republic, as Disney wants to open up the Star Wars timeline and appeal to a more Game of Thrones style audience. So the timeline is hundreds of years prior to the Skywalkers, so think almost Star Wars meets Lord of the Rings.”

Now, it should be noted this is all unconfirmed at present, but with Disney and Lucasfilm set to bring the Skywalker Saga to an end with Star Wars: Episode IX it’s certainly possible that the studios could be looking to take things in a completely new direction in an effort to freshen up the franchise as we move forward.
