Rumour: J.K. Simmons’ J. Jonah Jameson to cross cinematic universes with appearance in Sony’s Morbius movie

October 30, 2019 by Gary Collinson

After returning to the role of J. Jonah Jameson earlier this summer for a surprise appearance in the post-credits scene of Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, a new rumour is doing the rounds suggesting that Simmons will be back as the iconic Spider-Man character next year for an appearance in Sony’s Morbius movie.

The rumour originated on Twitter (via Comic Book), and is said to have been “corroborated” by several other online scoopers.

The Morbius movie – starring Jared Leto in the title role as Dr. Michael Morbius, a.k.a. the Living Vampire – is part of Sony’s ‘Universe of Marvel Characters’, which launched last year with Venom, so if this report is true it would mean that Simmons’ Jameson exists in both the SUMC and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

While the report remains unconfirmed at present, it’s certainly not beyond the realm of possibility that it could be true; during the announcement that Disney and Sony had reached a deal to extend Spider-Man’s stay in the MCU, Marvel boss Kevin Feige was quoted as stating that Tom Holland’s Peter Parker is “the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes”, and so it stands to reason that supporting characters such as Jameson, Aunt May, MJ and Ned will be doing the same.

Let’s just hope the continuity doesn’t get too messy…

Morbius is set for release on July 31st 2020 and sees Daniel Espinosa (Safe House) directing a cast that includes Jared Leto (Suicide Squad) as Dr. Michael Morbius, Adria Arjona (Pacific Rim Uprising) as Martine Bancroft, Matt Smith (Doctor Who) as Loxias Crown, Jared Harris (The Terror) as Morbius’ mentor, and Tyrese Gibson (Fast & Furious) as an FBI agent.
