Six new Doctor Who adventures arrive with Short Trips: Tales from the Vortex

April 16, 2025 by Andrew Newton

Six brand-new audio adventures in the popular Short Trips series have arrived today from Big Finish Productions. Short Trips: Tales from the Vortex brings six exciting adventures from across time and space featuring both classic and new eras of beloved Doctor Who.

These six new adventures are narrated by Janet Fielding, Rebecca Root and India Fisher, all of which have played the Doctor’s companions in the past, as well as Laura Aikman, Kaye Brown and Clare Corbett.

Short Trips: Tales from the Vortex features the following short stories:

  • Dark Watchers of California by Riley Silverman sees the Twelfth Doctor and Bill trying to catch up with Susie who is hiding out in California’s Big Sur. Can they find her, and what do the menacing Dark Watchers want with her?
  • When I say run… by Ben Tedds is a short tale with the Tenth Doctor and an awkward moment when an alien entity has taken over your body during a morning run.
  • Rise of the Eukaryans by Daniel Hardcastle. When a busy factory owner finds her face burnt into her toast and the contents of her fridge rearranged, she knows something isn’t quite right. Fortunately, the Eleventh Doctor turns up to help prevent an uprising by alien yeast creatures.
  • Ahead of Time by Paul Booth takes the Eighth Doctor and Charley to the planet Kairon, a world in ruins and its timeline in tatters. With the threat of the Time Lords wiping the planet from existence, can the Doctor help the planet’s leader set things right?
  • Emerald Isle by Christian Markham is a Seventh Doctor adventure that takes the listener to the Caribbean island of Montserrat. For Ace and her childhood friend, this tropical island is no paradise.  Can the Doctor help them find a way home?
  • Dark is the Devil that Walks by Mags L Halliday takes the Fifth Doctor, Tegan and Turlough back to 1814 Devon where palaeontologist Isabella Kerslake rescues the Doctor from a cliff collapse. While the Doctor is incapacitated, who can stop the mysterious figure that stalks his rescuer’s estate?

As well as more than four hours of exciting Doctor Who stories, Short Trips: Tales from the Vortex also features over an hour of behind-the-scenes material. Those who purchase will be able to download an accompanying four-page PDF booklet about the stories and contributors.

Short Trips: Tales from the Vortex is available to purchase now from the Big Finish website for £15.99 (download).
