Star Wars: The Last Jedi holds off Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle at the New Year’s weekend box office

January 2, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle couldn’t quite pull off the upset over the four day New Year’s weekend as Star Wars: The Last Jedi retains its top spot at the box office.

Early estimates for the weekend had The Last Jedi winning the traditional weekend but being pipped to first place by the Jumanji sequel over the four day weekend. This, however, didn’t come to pass, as The Last Jedi found its way to victory.

Earning an estimated $68.4 million, The Last Jedi just held on to its top spot, beating Jumanji: Welcome to Jungle’s impressive $66.5 million. Jumanji’s total now sits at a much better than expected $185.7 million in North America and $350 million worldwide.

The near $70 million New Year’s weekend by Star Wars: The Last Jedi takes the film’s domestic total to a colossus $533.1 million and past the $1 billion mark globally.
