When Star Wars returns to the big screen next year with Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu, it will have been seven years since the saga last played cinemas with The Rise of Skywalker, but we won’t be facing a similar wait for the next instalment as Disney and Lucasfilm have officially announced that production is underway on 2027’s Star Wars: Starfighter.
Directed by Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine), the film is being led by the previously-announced Ryan Gosling, who will star alongside Flynn Gray (Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2), Matt Smith (Doctor Who), Mia Goth (MaXXXine), Aaron Pierre (Lanterns), Simon Bird (The Inbetweeners), Jamael Westman (Hamilton), Daniel Ings (The Gentlemen), and Amy Adams (Nightbitch).
“I feel a profound sense of excitement and honor as we begin production on Star Wars: Starfighter,” stated Shawn Levy. “From the day Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally. Star Wars shaped my sense of what story can do, how characters and cinematic moments can live with us forever. To join this storytelling galaxy with such brilliant collaborators onscreen and off, is the thrill of a lifetime.”
Details on Star Wars: Starfighter are being kept under wraps, but we do know that it will take place after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and feature an original story. It’s also said that some Sequel Trilogy characters could return, but as you’ll have seen above, none have been announced as yet.
Star Wars: Starfighter is set for release on May 28th 2027.
