Tenet star John David Washington wants a sequel: “I hope we get to explore more”

September 22, 2020 by EJ Moreno

While the film is underperforming at the box office in the States (and has grossed just $250 million worldwide amid the ongoing pandemic), Tenet’s leading man hopes to see more from the film’s universe.

Actor John David Washington opened up to Esquire about wanting to see more from Christopher Nolan’s time-bending Tenet when asked if he felt the movie set up a sequel:

“In my mind, that’s a yes! We will be doing this again, we’ll see you in a couple of years. In reality, I don’t know. Chris does what he wants. Maybe he has something that he’s developed for years that he wants to do next, maybe he’s been inspired by something else he sees and wants to do that, I don’t know. I hope we get to do it again. I hope we get to explore more because I think we found something really unique.”

While neither Christopher Nolan nor Warner Bros have commented on any possible sequel, there’s an old expression about never say never when it comes to Hollywood.

Fans have pointed out the potential for a sequel with the film’s odd timeline allowing for the villainous Kenneth Branagh’s Sator to retur – some even going as far as thinking Sator’s son with Elizabeth Debicki’s Kat, Max, is a child version of Robert Pattinson’s Neil.

Washintgon opened up about that fan theory, “I saw that one the other day — I like that! I don’t know if it’s true or not, you gotta ask Chris, but if there’s another [movie] and they introduce that, that would be a lot of fun. We’ll see what happens.”

Armed with only one word – Tenet – and fighting for the survival of the entire world, the Protagonist journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that will unfold in something beyond real-time. Not time travel. Inversion.

Tenet sees Christopher Nolan directing a cast that includes John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Clémence Poésy, Michael Caine, and Kenneth Branagh.
