Thandie Newton on Ron Howard’s changes to Solo: A Star Wars Story

November 2, 2017 by Jordan Jones

We have had plenty of time to recover from the shock over Phil Lord and Chris Miller being ousted from their director’s chair for Solo: A Star Wars Story, and promptly replaced with Ron Howard. Old news at this point. However, even with the film having wrapped… even with all of the tweets Howard shares behind-the-scenes… well, we still don’t know much about the film. Hell, aside from some set photos, we still don’t even have an official photo of Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo.

Any news at all on the Han Solo spinoff can be considered illuminating at this point in time, and actress Thandie Newton’s recent comments, while not very detailed, still do reveal something about the film. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the actress details what, exactly, changed — if anything — once Ron Howard stepped in:

“Apart from the initial shock and feeling bad for [Lord and Miller] not being able to finish their work, their work is everywhere in it. Ninety percent of my stuff is with them. And it certainly wasn’t about, ‘Oh we have to start again and do it all over.'”

While she is speaking specifically about her own scenes for most of this, she does mention that Lord and Miller’s work is still very prevalent in the film. That’s runs counter to the recent rumour claiming Howard had reshot “at least 80%” of the film, resulting in it doubling its budget. Still, it will be interesting to see just how much Solo: A Star Wars Story retains the spirit of its previous directors.

Han Solo stars Alden Ehrenreich (Hail, Caesar!) as the famous smuggler, Donald Glover (Atlanta) as Lando Calrissian, Woody Harrelson (War for the Planet of the Apes) as Beckett (Solo’s mentor), Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), Thandie Newton (Westworld), Paul Bettany (Avengers: Infinity War), Ian Kenny (Sing Street), and Warwick Davis (Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi) in as-yet-unrevealed roles. It is set for release on May 25th 2018.
