The Flickering Myth writing team share their thoughts on the first trailer for Wonder Woman 1984…
During its big panel at Brazil’s Comic Con Experience this past Sunday, Warner Bros. unveiled the first trailer for Wonder Woman 1984, DC Films’ follow-up to its acclaimed 2017 superhero blockbuster, which reunites director Patty Jenkins with stars Gal Gadot (Diana Prince) and Chris Pine (Steve Trevor) as the Amazon Princess finds herself battling two new DC villain in Cheetah (Kristen Wiig) and Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal). Here’s what our writing team made of this first look trailer…
EJ Moreno – I feel like Patty Jenkins read my diary on everything I’d want from an 80s Wonder Woman movie. Fashion, drama, insane action! A great and entertaining first look at what will likely be another DC mega-hit
Hasitha Fernando – Looks like Patty Jenkins’ has taken a page out of Taika Waititi’s book. And that’s certainly not a bad thing. WW84 looks bolder yet more intimate than its predecessor and I for one cannot wait to see what the movie has to offer.
Gerald Jeffrey James – I knew I would like the aesthetic as soon as they announced the title. The trailer affirmed this for me. That Blue Monday cover was weird but it fits. I don’t know much about the plot but this trailer kind of tells me I don’t need to and that’s something I’d like to see more of in trailers. Sell me the world, not the story.
Jo Craig – I’m not the only one who got Thor: Ragnarok vibes from Patty Jenkins’ vibrant, 80’s style. After being in the minority and seriously disliking WW’s origin, I’m relieved for the giddy feelings I had during this trailer. Kristen Wiig will most likely steal the show in the middle of some top-tier action that still doesn’t warrant Steve Trevor’s existence in a firmly established woman’s world.

Tom Beasley – I love that, between this and Birds of Prey, DC is clearly making a move towards making colour A THING in their movies. Long overdue! This looks like a vibrant, energetic superhero tale that appears to be something more than just another 80s homage in the mould we’ve seen dozens of times in the last few years. I’m very excited indeed.
Laura Jorden – The look and feel of this future DC blockbuster is bodacious. Now they’ve got the origin story done, it’s clearly time for WW to really shine, Gadot is again lighting up the screen in every single scene and I appreciated the comic touch of her teaching a returned Steve this time around.
WW84’s trailer doesn’t give too much away in terms of plot, raising a few questions and definitely leaving you wanting more, Wiig as the baddie is intriguing and director Patty Jenkins is certainly making the most of that stunning lasso action, ensuring this vibrant spectacular will be a must see for me in 2020.

Ricky Church – This isn’t the trailer I was expecting and I mean that in a good way. It looks visually impressive with its 80s aesthetic, giving it it’s own look compared to the first film with it’s more vibrant colours and locations. The use of New Order’s song definitely helped boost the 80s tone to the trailer.
It’s great to see Gal Gadot and Chris Pine back. I’m curious as to how exactly Pine will be back. My current theory is that’s not really Steve Trevor, but we’ll see. I’m glad they’re saving Kristen Wiig’s Cheetah for a bigger reveal and Pedro Pascal is already very charismatic as Maxwell Lord. All in all I’m looking forward to what Patty Jenkins is bringing to the sequel.

Wonder Woman 1984 reunites director Patty Jenkins with stars Gal Gadot (Diana Prince), Chris Pine (Steve Trevor), Ewen Bremner (Charlie), Said Taghmaoui (Sameer), Connie Nielsen (Queen Hippolyta), Robin Wright (General Antiope), Lisa Loven Kongsli (Menalippe), Doutzen Kroes (Venelia) and new additions Kristen Wiig (Ghostbusters) as Barbara Ann Minerva/Cheetah, Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones) as Maxwell Lord, Natasha Rothwell (Love, Simon), Ravi Patel (Master of None, Grandfathered) and Gabriella Wilde (Doctor Who, Poldark) in an as-yet-unrevealed roles. It is set for release on June 5th 2020.
