The Little Things tops the U.S. box office alongside simultaneous HBO Max release

February 1, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

Even in the face of a pandemic, lackluster reviews and a simultaneous release on HBO Max, Denzel Washington’s moody detective drama The Little Things (read our review here) managed to get people into the 2,172 theatres that were showing it over the weekend, earning the number one spot and $4.8 million.

Ordinarily these kind of numbers would be a disaster, but nothing about the times we’re living in are ‘ordinary’, so the fact this debuted at the higher end of Covid-19 opening weekends suggests that not everyone wants to watch the 17 Warner Bros. premieres from the comfort of their own home.

On which, The Little Things unsurprisingly shot to the top of the streaming service’s most watched list, and although Warner Bros. and WarnerMedia don’t release exact viewing figures, Variety quotes HBO Max executive VP and general manager Andy Forssell as saying “We are absolutely thrilled by how Warner Bros.’ The Little Things is performing on HBO Max — it immediately shot up to number one, where it currently remains. Following the breakthrough success of Wonder Woman 1984, The Little Things shows the insatiable appetite our audience has for high quality, feature films.”

The Croods: A New Age remained in second place, and actually saw an increase during its tenth week on the charts, chiseling out $1.84 million, and in the process took its domestic total to an impressive $43.9 million.

Wonder Woman 1984 passed a depressing milestone at number three. Its $1.3 million weekend gross took its domestic total to $39.2 million, which surpasses the $38 million the original Wonder Woman managed on its opening day.

Elsewhere last weeks champion The Marksman slipped to number four with $1.25 million ($7.8 million total), just about Sony’s Monster Hunter, which took its domestic cume to $11.1 million by adding a further $740,000.

You can find the entire rundown over at Box Office Mojo.
