The tide is rising as James Wan reveals title for Aquaman sequel

June 11, 2021 by Ricky Church

Aquaman director James Wan has revealed on his Instagram account the title for the upcoming sequel as production begins to get underway for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

While plot details are currently being kept under wraps, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick from a story treatment by Aquaman himself, Jason Momoa. Momoa will once again reprise his role as Arthur Curry/Aquaman alongside Amber Heard as Mera and newcomer Pilou Asbaek (Game of Thrones) in an undisclosed role. Patrick Wilson is also expected to return as Orm/Ocean Master, Arthur’s half-brother and former king of Atlantis.

Momoa first starred as Aquaman in a brief cameo in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. He made his full appearance in the DCUE in the original 2017 theatrical cut of Justice League before leading his solo film in 2018. Aquaman was a huge success at the box office with over $1 billion. The only other DC films from Warner Bros. to cross that marker are The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises and Joker.

Wan was to produce a horror-themed spin-off to Aquaman titled The Trench which would have focused on the amphibian creatures that terrorize one part of the ocean. WB, however, decided to cancel development of The Trench earlier this year. Despite being cancelled, The Trench could be revived with Wan back to produce if WB believes Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is successful enough.

Production is set to begin in July in Hawaii.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is currently scheduled for a December 16th, 2022 release date.
