Tom Cruise officially signs on for The Mummy reboot

January 22, 2016 by admin

It was rumoured last year that Tom Cruise was in talks with Universal to star in their upcoming reboot of The Mummy, which is set to kick-start their Classic Monsters Shared Universe. Well, now it’s official.

Variety are reporting that Cruise has signed on for the picture, but will not serve as a producer as originally rumoured. However the outlet notes that he will play a major part in the movie’s development, and presumably the development of the future movies of the Shared Universe.

Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service), who was also in talks, has also joined the cast.

Directed by Alex Kurtzman (The Amazing Spider-Man 2), The Mummy was set to be released in May 2017, but this has now been pushed back to June 9th, 2017. The script has been written by Jon Spaihts (Doctor Strange). No details are known about it yet apart from that its set in the modern day and one script review called it “a horror to read”.

Universal have also been in talks with Angelina Jolie to play The Bride of Frankenstein and Scarlett Johnanson for a role in Creature From the Black Lagoon. These movies will join other classic Universal Monsters Frankenstein, The Wolf-Man and The Invisible Man for an Avengers-style team-up film.
