Tony Gilroy reveals Star Wars: Andor’s final episodes will lead directly into Rogue One

May 7, 2023 by Ricky Church

While The Mandalorian may be Disney+’s flagship Star Wars series, Andor really captivated audiences with its mature and character-driven story for its lead Cassian Andor and the supporting characters made up of familiar and new beings to the galaxy far, far away. With the second season currently in production, series creator and writer Tony Gilroy spoke of how the second and final season will lead directly into the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Rogue One is a prequel to the very first Star Wars film, detailing the days before the film’s start with how the Rebel Alliance managed to steal the plans for the Empire’s dreaded Death Star in search of a weakness. Cassian Andor, played by Diego Luna in the film and series, played a prominent role in the theft of the schematics, but ultimately met his end with Jyn Erso on the beaches of Scarrif by the very weapon they were determined to destroy. Andor has explored Cassian’s backstory and how he first got involved with the Rebel Alliance, becoming the hard and cold spy/assassin he is when we first met him.

In an interview with Empire Magazine, Gilroy revealed the final episodes of the second season will lead into Andor’s introduction in Rogue One. Specifically, the final three episodes of the twelve-episode season will be “the last three days before Rogue One.” Luna, who also sat down for the interview, even teased “The risks this season will take are very different” to what the show did in its first season.

Gilroy added “Look, man, I’m not trying to make a career here; if anything I’m on the downhill side of a long career. But this is an opportunity. This is 1,500 pages of the most dynamic material in these people’s lives to deal with. We got it right the first time, and you don’t want to let your foot off the gas.”

Andor‘s second season will see a time jump every few episodes as the show gets closer and closer to Cassian’s fate. Gilroy also teased we’ll see more of the struggle by several of the characters, such as Genevieve O’Reilly’s Mon Mothma and Stellan Skarsgård’s Luthen Rael, to organize the Alliance into something that could actually take on the Empire. “Some of its core ingredients are secrecy and paranoia and lack of trust and betrayal. So, how difficult is it to build a revolution? And what happens to the original gangsters, as other people get involved?”

Star Wars: Andor season two will premiere on Disney+ in August 2024.
