The Week in Spandex – Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, Captain America: Civil War, Captain Marvel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Jessica Jones, Fantastic Four 2, Arrow, The Flash and more

September 12, 2015 by Gary Collinson

In this edition of The Week in Spandex, we look at Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash, Arrow, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Vixen, Supergirl, Gotham, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, Avengers Assemble, Deadpool, X-Men: Apocalypse, Fantastic Four, Fantastic Four 2 and more…

Ever since it was announced at the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con, we’ve had to suffer through rumour after rumour from the usual suspects for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and while we already know that many of these have been complete fabrications (with a lot coming from a fake script that was doing the rounds), director Zack Snyder has come out claiming that it’s all just speculation: “There are so many, it’s insanity,” the director said of the movie’s rumours. “It’s funny because every now and then someone will touch on something that’s kind of true, but the next thing they say makes me realize that they took a wild guess. They’ll say something and I’ll say ‘Oh snap, they must have seen the script.’ And then they’ll say, ‘And this happens!’ And then I’ll go, ‘They have no idea what they’re talking about’. It’s fun for everyone to speculate and take shots and think of things and try to sell it. There’s an industry in selling your guess. [People think], ‘I’m going to make a fake script and look like I read the real one.’ What length are you willing to go? There’s a rumor that my son is [playing] Robin. It’s not true. Now there are all these images of him that people have made where he’s dressed like Robin. It’s fun to hear and see them…”

…Snyder also took a moment to address this week’s claims that Warner Bros. is looking to add more Batman to the movie, admitting that there’s an increased focus on The Dark Knight in the first act, before things even out: “Because it’s a different Batman than the Batman that was in the Chris Nolan movies, so we have a little bit more explaining to do—and you just had a whole Superman movie,” said Snyder when asked if the DC ensemble skews more towards Batman. “But I think only in that way, because you need to understand where Batman is with everything. And that’s more toward the beginning, but it evens back out as it goes on…”

…In other Batman v Superman news, Jesse Eisenberg has spoken briefly about the movie, stating that it’s “not a cartoonish superhero movie, it’s this very serious, well-acted, well-written, well-directed movie”, while Jason Momoa suggested at Fan Expo that he thinks his upcoming role as Aquaman in the DC Cinematic Universe will put an end to jokes about the character: “You know, it’s cute and funny. I mean people make fun of him and there’s a bunch of jokes about him, but I’m like ‘Well, just wait. Let’s just wait a little bit, and then we can make jokes…”

…Turning to Warner’s second DC movie of 2016 and this week has brought us a new behind-the-scenes look at Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, while Harley Quinn co-creator Paul Dini has shared his thoughts on Margot Robbie’s incarnation of the fan favorite character and Jared Leto’s Joker: ““[Suicide Squad] very much a real-world look. Jared Leto’s version of [The Joker] is almost like a decadent rockstar and there’s a little bit of Sid and Nancy to the Joker and Harley look, which I always felt would not be a bad look if they were in a live-action movie. I know it’s jarring to a lot of the people who love the classic Bruce Timm suit, I love it myself. But in that world [of the Suicide Squad movie], I just don’t see it happening. It’s a rougher, more street look. I think it works fine. I think Margot Robbie is very nice, she’s a very wonderful actress, certainly very attractive and very talented. I’m very excited to see that interpretation of Harley…”

…This one comes from El Mayimbe, so there’s a strong chance this rumour could be pure speculation, but apparently Warner Bros. is looking at Sean Bean (Game of Thrones) for the role of Ares in 2017’s Wonder Woman, while Eva Green (Penny Dreadful) is wanted to play Diana’s nemesis Circe. Wonder Woman is set to go into production this year, with Gal Gadot as the Amazon Princess and Chris Pine (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Steve Trevor…

…Remember the recent rumour that Warner Bros. wants George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road) to direct Man of Steel 2? Well Zack Snyder has said that there’s been no talks, but he’d love to see Miller tackling a DC movie: “[Fury Road] just a fucking great movie. No one would say that the best movie of the year isn’t Fury Road. We haven’t talked about it. If I was to think he had any interest in them of course I’m happy to talk to him…”

…Turning to the small screen and The CW has released an extended trailer for the second season of The Flash this week [watch it here], along with a promo featuring the likes of Jay Garrick and the Atom-Smasher [see here], while executive producer Gabrielle Stanton has revealed that Tom Cavanagh’s Harrison Wells is set to return in the second season: “Harrison Wells will be back, but he’s going to be a very different Harrison Wells than we’ve seen before. We’ve got other worlds. We’ve got other timelines. All I’m going to say is he’s from one of those places…”

…The CW also dropped a brand new trailer for the fourth season of Arrow [see here], as well as a BTS shot of Rutina Wesley’s Lady Cop courtesy of director Lexi Alexander [see here], and two more promotional images of Diggle in his Magneto cosplay [see here]…

…The Arrow and The Flash spinoff DC’s Legends of Tomorrow kicked off production this week, with The CW giving us our first look at Hawkman (Falk Hentschel) and Hawkgirl (Ciara Renee) in full costume in the first official promotional image [see here], while the latest episode of DC All Access also offered up some brief footage, as well as interviews with the cast and crew [see here]…

…If you’re keeping up to date with The CW’s animated superhero series Vixen, the third episode is now available to watch over on the CW Seed website…

..CBS continued its countdown to the premiere of Supergirl next month with a featurette entitled ‘A New Kind of Hero’, with the cast and crew explaining the inspiration for their modern take on Kara Zor-El; check it out here…

…Gotham will be the first DC show out of the gate this year when the second season gets underway on September 21st, and this week has brought us three new clips from the season two premiere ‘Damned If You Do’, which you can watch here and here…

…If you fancy yourself as the Caped Crusader and have a Bruce Wayne-sized bank balance, then you may be interested in purchasing yourself the Batmobile from the 1960s Batman TV series, which is up for sale for the princely sum of $5 million…

…Click below to continue on for Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, Avengers Assemble, Deadpool, X-Men: Apocalypse, Fantastic Four, Fantastic Four 2 and more…
