The Week in Spandex – Deadpool, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Daredevil, The Fantastic Four, Shazam, Heroes Reborn and more

March 28, 2015 by Gary Collinson

…With exactly a year to go before Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice explodes into cinemas, Warner Bros. decided to mark the occasion by giving us our first look at Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, confirming once and for all that he’s gone bald for the role. A textless verison of the Jason Momoa / Aquaman image was also officially released by the studio, while Gal Gadot has spoken out about criticism of her casting as Wonder Woman, stating that: “They said that I was too skinny and my boobs were too small. When I was younger I would take criticism really hard. But now it mostly amused me. The true amazons had one boob so it won’t bother them in their archery. So it’s not going to be like real amazons. We always try to make everyone happy but we can’t… After they asked me here, In Israel, if I have eating disorders and why am I so skinny, they said my head was too big and my body was like a broomstick I can take anything. It’s just empty talk. I understand that part of what I’m doing means being exposed. And part of being exposed is being under fire… I get to play the strongest most empowering woman ever – Wonder Woman. I’m so grateful and I thank god every day. I want to devour it and enjoy every bite. She has unbelievable endurance. She is exceptionally strong. She can jump really high and practically fly. She know tons of martial arts styles. She is a strong and serious woman…”

…With David Ayer gearing up to go into production on Warner’s second DC movie of 2016, the director has teased the inclusion of Arkham Asylum in Suicide Squad with his latest pre-production photo from the supervillain ensemble…

…Further down the DC universe road, and Dwayne Johnson has been talking more about 2019’s Shazam movie, which will see him starring as the antihero Black Adam: “We haven’t picked a Shazam yet. We have been working on the script. Half the script’s already come in. Fantastic. I’m very excited about it. And what I’m really excited about is – because I’ve lived with this character and this opportunity for almost 10 years now, so it’s like, in my DNA – I’m like a little kid, and it’s the opportunity to create his journey, but that journey has to start out properly. And starting off properly is [Black Adam] not being a hero. That’s got to be earned. So he starts off as a slave. And he’s pissed off, and people are going to pay. But eventually down the line he’ll become an anti-hero…”

..Shifting to DC’s small screen offerings and with Arrow now back from its midseason break you can read our review of episode seventeen of season three ‘Suicidal Tendencies’ here, as well as taking a peek at this coming Wednesday’s eighteenth episode ‘Public Enemy’ with a trailer, promo and stills here. And, if you’re not bothered about spoilers, you might want to take a look at a set photo from an upcoming episode of The Flash, which sees Oliver Queen’s Arrow sporting his new-look costume…

…And speaking of The Flash, you can read our review of Tuesday’s episode ‘Rogue Time’ here, while we’ve also got some concept art of Reverse-Flash [see here], along with a trailer, promo and images for this coming week’s episode ‘Tricksters’ featuring the return of Mark Hamill as James Jesse, which you can see here…

…On the animated DC front, this week has delivered a clip from the upcoming family feature Batman Unlimited: Animal Instincts, which sees the Caped Crusader teaming up with Green Arrow [watch it here]. The straight-to-DVD movie is set to arrive on May 12th…

…NBC’s upcoming Heroes revival has secured another original cast member, with Masi Oka set to return as Hiro Nakamura for a recurring guest role in Heroes Reborn, while will reunite him with Jack Coleman (Noah Bennet) alongside new additions Zachary Levi (Thor: The Dark World), Ryan Guzman (The Boy Next Door), Gatlin Green (Finding Cody), Henry Zebrowski (The Wolf of Wall Street), Robbie Kay (Once Upon a Time), Danika Yarosh (Shameless) and Judith Shekoni (Twilight)…

…And finally, with so many superhero movies incoming over the next few years, Neil Calloway has posted an op-ed here on Flickering Myth, asking ‘Where Are All The British Comic Book Movies?’, which you can check out here.
