The Week in Spandex – Warner Bros. shuffling DC slate, DCEU director rumours, Guardians of the Galaxy updates, Chris Hemsworth thought he was fired from Marvel

March 18, 2017 by Gary Collinson

In this edition of The Week in Spandex, we look at The Batman, The Flash, Green Lantern Corps, Gotham City Sirens, Suicide Squad 2, Justice League Dark, Man of Steel 2, Wonder Woman, Supergirl, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Arrow, Black Lightning, Teen Titans: The Judas Contract, Logan, X-Men: Apocalypse, Deadpool 2, X-Men: Supernova, Legion, Fantastic Four, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Thor: Ragnarok, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Iron Fist, The Defenders, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Inhumans, Venom, Quantum and Woody and more…

If you thought all the of the drama surrounding The Batman was over once Warner Bros. enlisted Matt Reeves to take over directing duties from Ben Affleck, then think again. This week has brought news that the studio is looking to push back production on the Dark Knight solo movie to 2018 due to Reeves’ commitments to War for the Planet of the Apes, and rumours are suggesting that the screenplay could even undergo a page-one rewrite despite earlier reports that everyone involved with the project was happy with the script…

…The Batman delay has had a knock on effect with the rest of the DC Films slate; first up came the news that Warner has pushed back Aquaman once again, with the film now occupying Avatar 2’s former release date of December 21st, 2018. Meanwhile, it’s said that as a result, Warner Bros. is considering moving forward with another DCEU film this year for release in 2018, with the five potential candidates for fast tracking said to be The Flash, Green Lantern Corps, Gotham City Sirens, Suicide Squad 2 and Justice League Dark (a.k.a. Dark Universe)…

…With Suicide Squad 2 potentially on the fast track, it has been revealed this week that Warner Bros. is in talks with The Legend of Tarzan screenwriter Adam Cozad to pen the script for the supervillain sequel, while it’s also been rumoured that The Shallows helmer Jaume Collet-Serra is under consideration to take on directing duties, giving some competition to Mel Gibson, who has been in talks with Warner Bros….

…It seems that Green Lantern Corps may also have found a director, with a rumour this week suggesting that David S. Goyer will be taking on the job in addition to his producing and co-writing duties. Meanwhile, Henry Cavill continued to tease Green Lantern’s introduction in the DCEU with his latest social media post, and Armie Hammer claimed that he’s technically in the running for the role of Hal Jordan “because they haven’t hired anyone…”

…And in another DC director rumour, it’s been reported this week that Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class and Kingsman: The Secret Service director Matthew Vaughn is wanted by Warner Bros. for Man of Steel 2, or another DC project should he decide to pass on Superman…

…While much of the DCEU is up in the air, we do have Wonder Woman arriving this June, and Warner Bros. unveiled a brand new ‘origin’ trailer for the Amazon Princess’ solo debut this week [watch it here], while we also got some new promo artwork of Gal Gadot’s superhero [see here], and director Patty Jenkins revealed that boxer Ann Wolfe is taking on the role of Artemis. Meanwhile, in other Wonder Woman-related news, Tweeterhead also unveiled its upcoming Lynda Carter collectible statue based upon the 1970s series The New Adventures of Wonder Woman. Take a look at the promotional images here…

…Turning to the small screen now and The CW has released a batch of promo images for Monday’s sixteenth episode of Supergirl ‘Star-Crossed’, which kicks off the two part musical crossover with The Flash [see here]. We also have a poster for the crossover featuring Melissa Benoist’s Kara and Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen [see here], along with a trailer and promo for The Flash’s concluding episode ‘Duet’ [watch them here]. Meanwhile, you can find Jessie Roberston’s review of this past Tuesday’s episode of The Flash ‘Into the Speed Force’ here…

…You can also read Jessie’s review of this week’s DC’s Legends of Tomorrow ‘Moonshot’ here, while we also have a trailer, promo and images for this coming Tuesday’s episode ‘Fellowship of the Spear’, which sees the team meeting J.R.R. Tolkien in the trenches of World War I [see here and here]…

…Jessie has also revealed this Wednesday’s episode of Arrow season five ‘Checkmate’ which you can read here, and you may also want to take a look at a trailer and promo for the next episode ‘Kapiushon’ [see here]…

…The CW has added another cast member to its upcoming Black Lightning pilot, with Christine Adams (Batman Begins, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) securing the role of Lynn Stewart, the ex-wife of Black Lightning himself, Jefferson Pierce. Adams joins a cast that includes Cress Williams as Jefferson Pierce and Nafessa Williams and China Anne McClain as his daughters Jennifer and Anissa…

…With Teen Titans: The Judas Contract set to receive its world premiere at WonderCon on March 31st ahead of its home-entertainment release in April, Warner Bros. has released a new image from the DC Universe Animated Original Movie featuring Raven, Blue Beetle, Starfire and Nightwing; check it out here…

…Click below to continue on for Logan, X-Men: Apocalypse, Deadpool 2, X-Men: Supernova, Legion, Fantastic Four, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Thor: Ragnarok, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Iron Fist, The Defenders, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Inhumans, Venom, Quantum and Woody and more…
