Tye Sheridan on how X-Men: Dark Phoenix will “shake up” the superhero genre

April 6, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Following his lead role in Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One, Tye Sheridan will next be seen reprising the role of Scott Summers, a.k.a. Cyclops, in 20th Century Fox’s superhero sequel X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

The film, which has recently been pushed back from its original November date to February next year, marks the directorial debut of long-time X-Men writer and producer Simon Kinberg. And according to Sheridan, Kinberg has taken a completely different approach to the film than past instalments in an effort to help it stand out in the crowded superhero market.

“Everyone was on the same page with the idea that we were approaching it as much more of a grounded drama versus a superhero movie,” said Sheridan in an interview with Collider. “Something that’s getting old with those universes and all the Marvel movies is that they all look the same and they’re all doing the same thing. We really wanted to shake it up, in that sense, and take a different approach to this. Simon Kinberg, who wrote the past three X-Men, directed Dark Phoenix, and I’m super, super excited about it. I think it will turn out well and that it will be a different X-Men than we’ve ever seen before, so that’s exciting.”

The “grounded drama” approach certainly worked wonders for Fox with last year’s Logan, so it will be interesting to see whether Kinberg and company can replicate that with a story that is much larger (cosmic!) in scope.
