Viggo Mortensen discusses a deleted flashback scene from The Lord of the Rings featuring Aragorn and Arwen

December 14, 2020 by Gary Collinson

It may be coming on for twenty year since the release of the first instalment, but it seems the cast of The Lord of the Rings still can’t take part in an interview with the subject of Peter Jackson’s epic fantasy trilogy cropping up.

Speaking to NME to promote the release of his directorial debut Falling, Viggo Mortensen has revealed details on a deleted scene from the J.R.R. Tolkien adaptation – a flashback sequence featuring Aragorn and Liv Tyler’s Arwen.

“There was a scene that we shot as a sort of memory flashback,” said Mortensen. “It was from the courtship days when he first met Arwen – and we shot it just before we were taking a break so I was clean-shaven and prettied up. They’d tried to make me look as young as possible. I had different hair and I was dressed like an elf.”

“It was a scene from the book where they’re walking in this flowery meadow,” he continued. “It was a beautiful sequence but obviously it wasn’t needed for the movie. I’ve never seen it but I enjoyed shooting that scene. It’d be nice to see it actually, it’s not in the extended editions either.”

While this deleted scene remains locked away, fans of The Lord of the Rings can now relive Jackson’s adaptation, and The Hobbit trilogy, with the recent release of brand new 4K restorations of all six films.
