The Good Dinosaur scores Pixar’s lowest opening weekend since Toy Story

November 30, 2015 by admin

Pixar’s latest movie, The Good Dinosaur, has scored the studio’s lowest opening weekend since its debut movie Toy Story.

Opening second behind The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 in its second week of release, The Good Dinosaur brought home $39.1 million on its opening weekend, which puts it just ahead of Toy Story, which opened to $29.4 million in 1995. It falls short of Ratatouille ($47 million) and Cars ($60.1 million), and way outside of Inside Out‘s $90 million opening weekend. Technically the film also opened ahead of A Bug’s Life and Toy Story 2, but those were only initially opened in a 1-theatre limited release.

The movie got an bump from the early Wednesday release, which brings its domestic total to $55 million. This puts it ahead of Ratatouille but still behind Cars, neither of which had the 5-day opening. The film also brought home an extra $28.7 million from its overseas showings, which included the UK.

The Good Dinosaur will face competition from Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip when it opens later on December 18th, but by that point we’ll all be talking about Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ box office takings.

Buckley (Justified), Steve Zahn (Dallas Buyers Club), Jack Bright (Monsters University) and Frances McDormand (Moonrise Kingdom).
