Jeph Loeb talks Marvel’s Jessica Jones and David Tennant’s Purple Man

August 16, 2015 by Gary Collinson

While Phase Three won’t kick off until the release of Captain America: Civil War in the spring, we will be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe later this year as Netflix ventures back into Hell’s Kitchen for its second Marvel series Jessica Jones.

During the Television Critics Association summer press tour, Marvel’s Head of Television Jeph Loeb has offered up a few words on the new series, which sees Krysten Ritter (Breaking Bad) starring as the eponymous superhero-turned-private eye, and former Doctor Who star David Tennant as the main villain Kilgrave, a.k.a. The Purple Man.

“When we first sat down and started talking about Daredevil, what we said was, for all intents and purposes, it was a crime drama first and a superhero show second,” said Loeb. “One of the things we’ve talked a lot about is that Jessica is in many ways a psychological thriller first and then a superhero show second.”

“In the same kind of way Vincent D’Onofrio owned his half of Daredevil,’ you’ll see David Tennant own his half of Jessica Jones,” he continued. “What you get out of Jessica is a sort of hold-your-breath tension as to what’s going to happen. When you see the dynamic between Krysten Ritter and David Tennant… that question of ‘What’s going to happen next?’ and ‘What could happen next?’ and how that’s driven by character is something that is so important to not just the scripts but also the way the show is shot, and the way that everyone reacts, and the way those two react with each other.”

Jessica Jones stars Krysten Ritter (Breaking Bad) as Jessica Jones, Mike Colter (The Following) as Luke Cage, David Tennant (Doctor Who) as Kilgrave, Rachael Taylor (Transformers) as Trish Walker / Hellcat, Eka Darville (The Originals) as Malcolm, Erin Moriarty (The Kings of Summer) as Hope, Wil Traval (Red Widow) as an NYPD officer and Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix) as Harper.
