Flickering Myth’s writing team present our top ten movies of 2015…
As 2015 draws to a close, the writing team here at Flickering Myth have been voting on our favourite movies from the past twelve months. As always, each of our writers produces their own individual list, which we then use to calculate our overall top ten of the year. So, without further ado, let’s get the countdown started…
10. Jurassic World
Directed by Colin Trevorrow.
Starring Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Vincent D’Onofrio, Omar Sy, Nick Robinson, Ty Simpkins, Judy Greer, Irrfan Khan, Jake Johnson and B.D. Wong.
Sneaking in at #10 – thanks to Whiplash, which featured at #9 last year and would have took #4 this time around had we gone on UK release dates – is Jurassic World, director Colin Trevorrow’s relaunch of the dino franchise, which shattered box office records on its way to a $1.6 billion worldwide gross this summer.
“Jurassic World is the sequel Jurassic Park truly deserved. And while it’s far from perfect, it is a huge amount of fun that will thrill and entertain both fans of the series and newcomers to the franchise.” – Luke Owen

9. Sicario
Directed by Denis Villeneuve.
Starring Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro, Josh Brolin, Jon Bernthal, Maximillano Hernandez and Daniel Kaluuya.
Acclaimed director Denis Villeneueve explores the war against the Mexican drug cartels with the action thriller Sicario, which topped one of our writers’ individual favourite lists and claims #9 in our countdown.

8. Kingsman: The Secret Service
Directed by Matthew Vaughn
Starring Taron Egerton, Colin Firth, Samuel L. Jackson, Sofia Boutella, Mark Strong, Sophie Cookson, Michael Caine and Mark Hamill.
Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn brought a second Mark Millar comic book to the big screen this year with the hit spy caper Kingsman: The Secret Service, which sees Taron Egerton’s Eggsy joining an elite spy agency and saving the world from Samuel L. Jackson’s mad billionaire philanthropist.
“Whether it’s watching Eggsy and the other potential recruits in training skydive out of a plane trying to solve the issue of one of them not having a parachute, or ridiculous gadgets like an umbrella that can shoot and shock people, or goons getting sliced open by a woman with knives for feet, this movie defines fun.” – Robert Kojder

7. The Martian
Directed by Ridley Scott.
Starring Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Kate Mara, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kristen Wiig, Michael Pena, Sebastian Stan, Donald Glover, Mackenzie Davis, Benedict Wong, and Sean Bean.
2015 saw Ridley Scott returning to the sci-fi genreonce more, stranding Matt Damon’s astronaut Mark Watney on the Red Planet with The Martian, which comes in at #7 in our list of the year’s best.
“The Martian is fantastic and a great return to form for Ridley Scott. He stages the film around the theme of survival and man’s willingness to defy death, which ultimately winds up uplifting. 6. It Follows
Written and Directed by David Robert Mitchell
Starring Maika Monroe, Lili Sepe, Keir Gilchrist, Bailey Spry, Jake Weary, Daniel Zovatto
Next up is It Follows, the acclaimed horror from director David Robert Mitchell, which stars Maika Monroe as a young girl pursued by a supernatural force after a sexual encounter. The film topped one of our writers’ individual top tens, and just missed out on a place in the top five overall.
“It Follows is a movie that will stay with you long after the credits roll and play into your subconscience as you’re walking home from the cinema. It Follows is a horror classic in the making and should be hailed as one of the best movies of 2015.” – Luke Owen
