Doug Liman to direct Justice League Dark movie, exits Gambit

August 25, 2016 by Amie Cranswick

It looks like Doug Liman has grown tired of waiting for 20th Century Fox to get its oft-delayed Gambit movie off the ground, as it has been revealed that the Edge of Tomorrow director is swapping the X-Men franchise for the DC Extended Universe – and more specifically, the supernatural side of the DCEU.

Variety is reporting that Liman has signed on to direct Justice League Dark for Warner Bros., with the studio reviving the project which spent several years in development under Guillermo del Toro (who remains attached as a producer). The report also states that the line-up will feature John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna and Etrigan the Demon, and suggests that the film “will play a major role” in the DCEU.

As a result of Justice League Dark, Liman has officially exited the Channing Tatum-headlined Gambit, in what is said to be “a mutual split”.

Currently, there’s no word on a potential release date for Justice League Dark, although it’s possible that it could take one of Warner’s two mystery DC dates on October 5th 2018 and November 1st 2019. Meanwhile, the team will also appear in a new DC Universe Animated Original Movie release, which is expected later this year [watch a sneak peek here].
