Ryan Reynolds on Logan: “It could break the glass ceiling” at the Oscars

January 4, 2017 by Ricky Church

Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds has been vocal lately about wanting to team with Hugh Jackman for a Deadpool/Wolverine film, and now he has shared his excitement for Jackman’s final turn as the clawed mutant in Logan.

Reynolds recently spoke to Variety about the upcoming X-Men spin-off and offered very high praise about the film, saying it might even gain some Oscar attention: “Logan looks like a movie that might break that glass ceiling,” Reynolds said. “I know first-hand that it’s amazing. I’ve seen some of it. It’s mind-blowing. It relies a lot on character.”

His latter comment lines up well with what we’ve heard about Logan before – that it will indeed focus more on the character of Wolverine and is meant more for a “grown-up audience” than the previous Wolverine and X-Men films.

Even Jackman himself commented on Logan‘s possible Oscar chances and on Reynolds himself gaining a Golden Globe nomination for Deadpool, saying “When I hosted the Oscars, Batman (The Dark Knight) didn’t get nominated, and everyone was talking about it. It’s a stretch to say these are injustices in life — we are happy and making movies. But I love it when someone like Ryan gets recognized. These big-budget or comic book movies are not easy to pull off.”

Back in 2009, many felt The Dark Knight was snubbed in many of the big categories – save for Best Supporting Actor for Heath Ledger’s Joker, an award he won posthumously – which resulted in the Academy expanding the Best Picture category to ten films. Since then, however, no other superhero film has come close to being nominated in the major categories.

Despite that, the Academy still recognizes films based on graphic novels and other comics in those categories from time to time, such as Road to Perdition or A History of Violence, but they are often far and few between.

Could Logan break the cycle and earn a long-awaited Oscar nomination for a comic book film?
