Sony revives plans for Spider-Man spinoff Venom

March 4, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Prior to Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios reaching a deal to bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sony had been keen to launch a spinoff movie centred around the fan favourite character of Venom, and now The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the project is back on.

The site reports that Dante Harper (Sleepless Night, Edge of Tomorrow) has signed on to pen the script for the Venom movie, which will be produced by Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach. However, it won’t be related to the upcoming Spider-Man reboot starring Tom Holland (who is set to make his debut in Captain America: Civil War), and is instead intended to stand on its own and serve as a potential franchise launcher. Which, by the sounds of it, means we won’t be seeing the character in the MCU any time soon…

Venom made his big screen debut in Spider-Man 3, where he was played by Topher Grace, while directors Gary Ross (The Hunger Games) and Josh Trank (Fantastic Four) have both attached to the planned spinoff at one point, as have screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Star Trek) and Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese (Deadpool).

Are you excited about the prospect of a Venom movie? Or should Sony leave all things Spider-Man to Marvel Studios? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
