Phil Lord and Chris Miller say Sony’s animated Spider-Man movie will be unique

June 24, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Following his debut in Captain America: Civil War, Tom Holland’s Peter Parker will return to the big screen next year in Spider-Man: Homecoming, but Sony also has a second Spidey movie in the works, with 2018 set to see the arrival of an animated theatrical feature.

Speaking to IGN to promote their new sitcom Son of Zorn, writers Phil Lord and Chris Miller – whose previous credits include the rather splendid The LEGO Movie – have spoken briefly about the animated Spider-Man film, describing it as “unique”.

“It is not going to feel like every other Spider-Man movie you’ve seen. It will stand on its own as a unique filmgoing experience,” said Miller, with Lord adding that: “It’s wonderful and the people that are working on it are geniuses. It is unique. … People will love it.”

Meanwhile, Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman Tom Rothman has also spoken about the project during an interview with THR: “We have dated Christmas 2018 for what I believe is truly going to be a breakthrough animated sensation. [Phil] Lord and [Chris] Miller, who did the LEGO movies, are doing an animated Spider-Man. And it has a very breakthrough look to it, and a fantastic story, and it’s independent from our Marvel Spider-Man.”

The animated Spider-Man movie is set for release on December 21st, 2018, with Bob Persichetti set to direct.
