Legendary secures live-action Pokemon rights, developing Detective Pikachu movie

July 21, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Originally published July 21, 2016. Updated April 16, 2018.

Hollywood has been circling the live-action movie rights for several months now, with bidding intensifying following the smash hit release of Pokemon Go.

Earlier this week it was revealed that Legendary Entertainment had emerged as front-runner for the rights, and now Legendary and The Pokemon Company have announced that they have reached a deal to launch a live-action franchise, which will be built around Detective Pikachu, a new character introduced through the recent Japanese video game Great Detective Pikachu.

Further details on the live-action project are being kept under wraps, although it is expected that production will get underway next year. As yet, there’s no word on a creative team, although Max Landis (Chronicle) has been mentioned as a potential screenwriter.
