Valene Kane playing Jyn Erso’s mother in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

September 27, 2016 by Gary Collinson

We’ve known for a while that Mads Mikkelsen is playing Galen Erso, the father of Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso, in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and now we know who’s playing her mother too, with actress Valene Kane (The Fall) revealing that she’s set to portray Lyra Erso in December’s Anthology movie.

“I grew up watching Stars Wars and I didn’t believe it was happening until I was filming in Iceland,” said Kane in an interview with told Belfast Live. “[The film] has a really edgy independent vibe.”

Given that Kane shot her scenes in Iceland (and the fact she’s four years younger than Felicity Jones), we can assume that she’ll feature in flashback scenes with a young Jyn Erso and will presumably only have a minor role in the film.

From Lucasfilm comes the first of the Star Wars standalone films, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, an all-new epic adventure. In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is set for release on December 16th 2016, with a cast that includes Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), Diego Luna (Milk), Ben Mendelsohn (The Dark Knight Rises), Donnie Yen (Ip Man), Jiang Wen (Let the Bullets Fly), Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland), Alan Tudyk (Con Man), Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler), Genevieve O’Reilly (Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith), Jimmy Smits (Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones), Valene Kane (The Fall) and Jonathan Aris (Sherlock).
