Disney confirms Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange for Thor: Ragnarok

January 1, 2017 by Gary Collinson

It looks like Thor and The Hulk won’t be the only Marvel superheroes teaming up in November’s Thor: Ragnarok, as Disney has confirmed that Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange is set to feature in the Taika Waititi-directed blockbuster.

“If you need even more intergalactic, world-saving action, Thor: Ragnarok in November brings together Thor, the Hulk, and Doctor Strange to face off against intergalactic baddies both familiar and new,” reads a statement on Disney’s D23 website looking ahead at the year’s big releases from the House of Mouse.

The Sorcerer Supreme’s inclusion in Thor: Ragnarok was of course teased in the mid-credits scene of Doctor Strange, where Strange promised to help Thor locate Odin, who is missing after the events of Thor: The Dark World.

Thor: Ragnarok will mark Cumberbatch’s second outing as Doctor Strange, while he is also confirmed as reprising the role for Avengers: Infinity War.

Thor: Ragnarok is being directed by Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows) and features Marvel veterans Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Idris Elba as Heimdall, Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk and Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange alongside Cate Blanchett as Hela, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster, Karl Urban as Skurge and Sam Neill in an as-yet-unrevealed role. It is set for release on November 3rd, 2017.
