Disney CEO reveals Han Solo Star Wars spinoff story details, will span six years

March 24, 2017 by Amie Cranswick

As production continues on the as-yet-untitled young Han Solo movie, Disney CEO Bob Iger has peeled back the curtain on the second Star Wars Anthology film somewhat, offering up the very first plot details for the May 2018 release.

“It picks up Han Solo when he was 18 years old and takes him through when he was 24. There were a few things that happened [that were] significant in Han Solo’s life, like acquiring a certain vehicle and meeting a certain Wookiee, that will happen in this film. But you’ll also discover how he got his name.”

Iger’s comments about “how he got his name” have certainly sparked speculation among fans: does he mean that Han Solo isn’t the smuggler’s real name, or is he referring to how Han got his reputation as a smuggler and scoundrel?

Meanwhile, appearing on Jimmy Fallon, Woody Harrelson has also spoken briefly about his character, stating that: “I play a guy named Beckett who’s kind of a criminal and mentor to Han. That’s all I can say. I’ll be there until the end of July.”

Harrelson didn’t really offer up anything new save for his character’s name, which puts an end to the debate over whether he is portraying Garris Shrike. Of course, that doesn’t mean Beckett’s character isn’t inspired by Shrike…

Han Solo hits theaters on May 25th, 2018 and stars Alden Ehrenreich (Hail, Caesar!) in the leading role as the famous smuggler, the Han Solo film is directed by Chris Miller and Phil Lord and also features Donald Glover (Atlanta) as Lando Calrissian, Woody Harrelson as Han Solo’s mentor, and Game of Thrones‘ Emilia Clarke and Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge in unrevealed roles
