Gina Rodriguez wanted for Catherine Hardwicke’s Miss Bala remake

April 8, 2017 by Gary Collinson

According to Deadline, Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez is wanted for the lead role in a remake of the 2011 Mexican drama Miss Bala, which is set to be directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight, Red Riding Hood).

The original film follows a young beauty pageant contestant who witnesses a drug-related murder and is kidnapped by the gang and forced to do their bidding. The script for the remake is being written by Gareth Dunnet Alcocer, while Kevin Misher and Pablo Cruz are set to produce.

Hardwicke is also said to be circling an adaptation of the classic 1961 children’s book The Phantom Tollbooth, although Miss Bala could jump to the front of the queue if Rodriguez’s casting is confirmed.
