Matthew Vaughn thinks Guardians of the Galaxy and Star Wars may have killed his Flash Gordon reboot

September 25, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Back in April of 2015, it was announced that Matthew Vaughn had signed on to direct a reboot of Flash Gordon for 20th Century Fox.

We’ve heard very little about the project since, but in an interview with Collider to promote the release of Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Vaughn has confirmed that he is still attached, although he thinks that it may be difficult to make the movie stand out against the likes of Guardians of the Galaxy and Star Wars.

“For me, the only problem with Flash Gordon is Guardians of the Galaxy kind of stole what I would have liked to have done with it. You’ve got Star Wars, you’ve got Guardians, so you’ve got to have your own space opera, but you have to find something that can survive among these two very, very great franchises.”

At the moment, it’s unclear what Vaughn’s next project will be. A third Kingsman movie is on the table (particularly after the second’s strong start at the box office), while he’s also expressed his interest in Man of Steel 2, as well as a Fantastic Four reboot.
