We almost saw a blind Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, reveals Rian Johnson

November 30, 2017 by Jordan Jones

Bringing back an iconic character like Luke Skywalker for Star Wars: The Last Jedi must have been an incredibly daunting task for director Rian Johnson. Where do you take a character that has such a staggering legion of fans? Any hard-coated choice for the character could potentially alienate a huge group of fans. With that said, it’s a safe bet that there were many versions of Luke Skywalker that were left on the cutting room floor before the character was finally solidified for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Well, here is one idea for Luke that didn’t make it into the final cut.

Both Mark Hamill, and Rian Johnson recently spoke to Rolling Stone, and during the interview, the director revealed something directly to Hamill:

“Did I ever tell you that early on when I was trying to figure out the story for this, I had a brief idea I was chasing where I was like, ‘What if Luke is blind? What if he’s, like, the blind samurai?’ But we didn’t do it. You’re welcome. Didn’t stick.”

Could you see this idea working? Would a blind Luke have worked for the film, or would it have simply become distracting in the long run? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

In Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Skywalker saga continues as the heroes of The Force Awakens join the galactic legends in an epic adventure that unlocks age-old mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is set for release on December 14th in the UK and December 15th in the States and sees returning cast members Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), Daisy Ridley (Rey), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Gwendoline Christie (Captain Phasma), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Andy Serkis (Supreme Leader Snoke), Peter Mayhew and Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Tim Rose (Admiral Ackbar), Mike Quinn (Nien Nunb), Simon Pegg (Unkar Plutt), and Warwick Davis joined by new additions Jimmy Vee (Pan) as R2-D2, Kelly Marie Tran (Ladies Like Us) as Rose, and Benicio Del Toro (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Laura Dern (Jurassic Park).
