Thor: Ragnarok was going to feature a childhood flashback with a fat Thor and goth Loki

November 9, 2017 by Gary Collinson

During an interview of MTV’s Happy Sad Confused Podcast, Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi has revealed that he originally planned to include a scene in the Marvel blockbuster which would have been a flashback to an 80s-style Asgard showing Thor and Loki’s childhood, with the God of Thunder as an overweight kid and the God of Mischief as a goth.

“Well I wanted this little thing, and maybe if we ever do a Thor 4 we can have it, but I wanted to do some flashbacks where Thor was a kid, a fat little kid,” said Waititi. “There was like an 80s version of Asgard where everyone had massive shoulder pads, and everyone had mullets. Our idea was Thor and Valkyrie meet and he’s like, ‘Hey I know you,’ and she’s like ‘Ha I remember you,’ and then it cuts back to this thing and he’s just this pudgy little kid walking around with a mullet and being picked on by other kids. And Loki’s like this little emo goth hanging out by himself. He was like [Malfoy] in Harry Potter. The problem was we needed Thor to not know Valkyire in the film. And then it became less and less of a thing to have a flashback. We would’ve been forcing it, so it would’ve been a situation where we would have been having a pointless flashback.”

It certainly sounds like it could have been a fun little scene. Let us know in the comments below if you’d like to pay a visit to an 80s-style Asgard should Waititi return for a fourth Thor movie…

In Marvel Studios’ “Thor: Ragnarok,” Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok—the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization—at the hands of an all-powerful threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger—the Incredible Hulk.

Thor: Ragnarok is directed by Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows) and features a cast that includes Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Idris Elba as Heimdall and Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Cate Blanchett as Hela, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster, Karl Urban as Skurge, Taika Waititi as Korg, Clancy Brown as Surtur, Rachel House as Topaz, Tadanobu Asano as Hogun, Ray Stevenson as Volstagg and Zachary Levi as Fandral.
