Just a few months out from Star Wars: The Last Jedi, it’s almost time for the next instalment of the Star Wars saga as Disney and Lucasfilm prepare to unveil their second Anthology movie, Solo: A Star Wars Story, this May.
According to Box Office Pro, the Ron Howard-directed Han Solo prequel is tracking a three-day domestic opening weekend in the range of $150 million, which would put it just a shade under the $155 million debut for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in December 2016.
The site goes on to note that Solo is unlikely to enjoy the same kind of legs as Rogue One, given that it faces some heavy competition in the likes of Avengers: Inifnity War, Deadpool 2 and Incredibles 2. It estimates that Solo could gross around $390 million domestically, down from the $532 million of Rogue One.
There’s no word yet on any possible estimates for international markets, but it’s very possible that with a sub-$400 million domestic total, Solo: A Star Wars Story could become the first Star Wars film under the Disney umbrella to fail to reach the $1 billion mark worldwide.
