Evangeline Lilly pushed to increase the romance in Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp

Warning. A minor Ant-Man and the Wasp spoiler follows…

Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp finally made it to UK shores this weekend, and actress Evangeline Lilly has been chatting to Digital Spy about the film, during which she revealed that she pushed to increase the level of romance between the two heroes in the blockbuster sequel.

“You might be surprised to find out that, if anything, in these films, I’ve sort of pushed the romance up just a notch – just the tiniest bit,” said Lilly. “Because it was there all the time but the Marvel executives and Peyton were so cool – and Paul Rudd I think, as well – about not wanting that to be at all what she’s about, and wanting her to have this incredible career, this incredible drive and motivation, and for the love story to be absolutely back seat to everything else in the movie, which I love, and I think it’s appropriate.”

“But I did find myself just sitting back as an audience member and thinking, ‘These two characters are so adorable together. We want some satisfaction as an audience. We want to see the fruition of that chemistry,'” she continued. “So, in Ant-Man and The Wasp it was me who added the – spoiler alert – kiss. There wasn’t one in the script. On the day, when we got there to shoot, I said, ‘Listen – this is what I feel like I want to do, and I feel like it’s what Hope wants to do. Can I do it?'”

Rudd’s Scott Lang and Lilly’s Hope Van Dyne are set to return to the big screen next year in Avengers 4, although their romance probably won’t have too much time to blossom given the Thanos-sized threat that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are facing.

From the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes Ant-Man and The Wasp, a new chapter featuring heroes with the astonishing ability to shrink. In the aftermath of Captain America: Civil War, Scott Lang grapples with the consequences of his choices as both a super hero and a father. As he struggles to rebalance his life with his responsibilities as Ant-Man, he’s confronted by Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym with an urgent new mission. Scott must once again put on the suit and learn to fight alongside the Wasp as the team works together to uncover secrets from the past.

Ant-Man and the Wasp sees Peyton Reed returning to the director’s chair and stars Paul Rudd (Scott Lang), Evangeline Lilly (Hope Van Dyne), Michael Douglas (Hank Pym), Michael Pena (Luis), David Dastmalchian (Kurt), Abby Ryder Fortson (Cassie Lang), Judy Greer (Maggie), Bobby Cannavale (Paxton) and T.I. (Dave), while new additions to the cast include Michelle Pfeiffer as Janet Van Dyne, Laurence Fishburne as Dr. Bill Foster/Goliath, Hannah John-Kamen as The Ghost, Walton Goggins as Sonny Burch and Randall Park as Jimmy Woo.
