With the hotly-anticipated Godzilla: King of the Monsters set to hit the big screen at the end of the month, Legendary Comics has unleashed its MonsterVerse graphic novel Godzilla: Aftershock, the official prequel to the new film. Written by Arvid Nelson, with art by Drew Edward Johnson, Godzilla: Aftershock introduces characters from the upcoming movie and invites readers to delve further into the activities of cryptozoological agency Monarch. The brilliant and driven Monarch operative Dr. Emma Russell races to stop the threat as clues emerge to reveal a terrible secret—a tragedy, of apocalyptic proportions from the distant past that changed the course of human history, is returning to threaten it once more. A shadowy figure stalks Emma’s every move as she travels the globe to uncover secrets, while Godzilla clashes in an ancient rivalry as old as the Earth itself.
“Part of the fun of working on a Godzilla project is that its massive scale demands that it be a collaboration with talented artists and Aftershock is no exception,” said Godzilla: King of the Monsters director Michael Dougherty. “Arvid Nelson and Drew Edward Johnson have created a story that is just as epic and compelling as Godzilla’s big screen adventures. So much so that it sometimes feels like you’re flipping through the storyboards of a movie just waiting to be shot.”
Godzilla: King of the Monsters is set for release on May 31st, 2019 and sees Michael Dougherty (Krampus) directing returning Godzilla stars Sally Hawkins (Dr. Vivienne Graham) and Ken Watanabe (Dr. Ishiro Serizawa), and new additions Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things), Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights), O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Straight Outta Compton), Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel), Aisha Hinds (Star Trek Into Darkness), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley), Zhang Ziyi (The Grandmaster), Randy Havens (Stranger Things) and Elizabeth Ludlow (The Walking Dead).
