NBC hoping to reboot The Office in 2021

September 21, 2019 by Gary Collinson

As it rolls out its plans for its upcoming Peacock streaming service, NBC Universal has revealed that early talks are underway about rebooting the hit U.S. sitcom The Office once the streaming rights to the original series returns to the studio in 2021.

“It is my hope and goal that we do an Office reboot,” said NBC Universal’s Bonnie Hammer, Chairman of Direct-to-Consumer and Digital Enterprises. “The Office comes back to us in January 2021. It is my hope that we can figure what that great reboot would be. We are having conversations.”

A remake of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s beloved British series, the American version of The Office ran for nine seasons on NBC between 2005 and 2013, winning five Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe. It is currently available on Netflix, although NBC has recently paid over $500 million to pick up the streaming rights.

NBC Universal has already announced three reboots for the Peacock service in Battlestar Galactica, Saved By the Bell and Punky Brewster.
