Joaquin Phoenix is open to a Joker sequel

October 10, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Joaquin Phoenix, the star of Joker, has revealed that he is open to returning to the role with Todd Phillips at the helm.

Joaquin Phoenix’s turn as the titular villain in Joker has gone down a treat, particularly among fans. But up until now, it seemed like this would be the only time we would ever see this interpretation of the character.

Well, this might not be the case as Phoenix has revealed that he is open to returning to the part. Speaking on Popcorn with Peter Travers about if the Joker was his dream role, he said:

“You know, I wouldn’t have thought about this as my dream role. But now, honestly, I can’t stop thinking about it. I talked to Todd a lot about what else we might be able to do, in general, just to work together, but also specifically, if there’s something else we can do with Joker that might be interesting. So, it ended up being a dream role. It’s nothing that I really wanted to do prior to working on this movie.

“I don’t know that there is [more to do]. Me and Todd would still be shooting now if we could, right? Because it seemed endless, the possibilities of where we can go with the character.”

So, Phoenix clearly had a great time playing the role and working with Phillips and he doesn’t seem to be ruling out some kind of continuation of this story. Supposedly it all depends on if he and Phillips can think of an exciting reason to return.

Joker centres around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. The exploration of Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study but also a broader cautionary tale.

Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix (The Sisters Brothers), Robert De Niro (Goodfellas), Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2), Bill Camp (Red Sparrow), Frances Conroy (American Horror Story), Brett Cullen (Narcos), Glenn Fleshler (Billions), Douglas Hodge (Penny Dreadful), Marc Maron (GLOW), Josh Pais (Motherless Brooklyn), Shea Whigham (Kong: Skull Island), Douglas Hodge (Robin Hood) and Dante Pereira-Olson (You Were Never Really Here).
