Margot Robbie confirms that Jared Leto’s Joker won’t be appearing in Birds of Prey

January 3, 2020 by Liam Waddington

Margot Robbie, who is known for playing Harley Quinn, has confirmed Jared Leto’s Joker won’t be included in the upcoming Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), “not even as a cameo,” during a recent interview with Variety.

During Suicide Squad, Robbie says she “fell in love with” Harley Quinn, though she didn’t understand why the wildly brilliant, unstable character would stay in a relationship with the Joker (played by Jared Leto), who “wants to kill her most of the time… [Birds of Prey] as its subtitle implies, starts after Harley’s breakup with the Joker. Robbie confirms that Leto’s incarnation of the character doesn’t appear, not even as a cameo.”

Set photos from back in April did show Robbie shooting what appeared to be a break-up scene with the Joker, although it wasn’t Leto on set but rather a stand-in. Whether Robbie is referring to Leto himself not making an appearance, or this scene has ended up on the cutting room floor, we shall have to wait and see.

Although there has been no confirmation by Warner Bros., it could be safe to assume that Leto’s Joker is all but done in the DCEU as Leto is seemingly not appearing in Birds of Prey, hasn’t been announced for Matt Reeves’ The Batman, and his standalone film is no longer happening.

Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is a twisted tale told by Harley herself, as only Harley can tell it. When Gotham’s most nefariously narcissistic villain, Roman Sionis, and his zealous right-hand, Zsasz, put a target on a young girl named Cass, the city is turned upside down looking for her. Harley, Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya’s paths collide, and the unlikely foursome have no choice but to team up to take Roman down.

Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs) is directing Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) from a script by Christina Hodson (Bumblebee) with Margot Robbie reprising her Suicide Squad role as Harley Quinn alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Fargo) as The Huntress, Jurnee Smolett-Bell (Underground) as Black Canary, Rosie Perez (Fearless) as Renee Montoya, Ella Jay Basco (Grey’s Anatomy) as Cassandra Cain, Ewan McGregor (Christopher Robin) as Black Mask, Chris Messina (Sharp Objects) as Victor Zsasz, Ali Wong (Black Box), Robert Catrini (Jack Reacher: Never Go Back), Steven Williams (The Chi), Dana Lee (Dr. Ken), Francois Chau (The Expanse, The Tick) and Matthew Willig (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs). It is set for release on February 7th 2020.
