Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Tiffani Thiessen in talks for Saved By the Bell reboot

January 10, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Last year it was announced that NBC is heading back to Baywatch for a reboot of the classic teen sitcom Saved By the Bell, with Elizabeth Berkley (Jessie Spano) and Mario Lopez (A.C. Slater) set to reprise their roles alongside a new cast of young characters.

Well, it seems we can add another two of the original cast to the new series, with THR reporting that Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Tiffani Thiessen are in final talks to return as Zack Morris and Kelly Kapowski for a number of guest appearances, while Gosselaar will also serve as a producer.

Meanwhile, it has also been announced that transgender actress Josie Totah (Champions) has been cast in the lead role of the show as Lexi, described as “a beautiful, sharp-tongued cheerleader and the most popular girl at Bayside High who is both admired and feared by her fellow students.”

The new Saved By the Bell has been written by Tracey Wigfield (30 Rock, Great News) and will explore “what happens when California Gov. Zack Morris (Gosselaar’s role) gets into hot water for closing too many low-income high schools and proposes the affected students be sent to the highest-performing schools in the state — including Bayside High. The influx of new students gives the over-privileged Bayside kids a much-needed and hilarious dose of reality.”
