Yennefer almost looked very different in The Witcher

January 21, 2020 by Samuel Brace

Yennefer, one of the main characters in Netflix’s The Witcher, almost had quite a different appearance.

Aside from Geralt’s journey to find Ciri, Yennefer’s exploits as a witch made up a large part of The Witcher season one on Netflix. Yennefer starts out as a hunched back young girl but through some messed up magic is transformed into a seductive sorceress.

However, it has been revealed on a behind the scenes podcast (via ComicBook.com) that she originally had a very different look thanks to an extra abnormality. Csilla Blake-Horváth, a makeup artist on the show, had this to say:

“Originally we talked about a birthmark on her face, which I did a graphic design for. But then, because of the hunchback and because of the dental prosthetics — the birthmark, plus the wig, it was too much on one person.”

It does seem like the birthmark may have been an unnecessary addition to Yennefer’s appearance – the transformation is startling enough as it is. Did you enjoy The Witcher season 1? Let us know in the comments below and on Twitter @flickeringmyth…

Based on the best-selling fantasy series of books, The Witcher is an epic tale of fate and family. Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. The Witcher stars Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer and Freya Allan as Ciri. Other cast members include Jodhi May, Björn Hlynur Haraldsson, Adam Levy, MyAnna Buring, Mimi Ndiweni, Therica Wilson-Read, Emma Appleton, Eamon Farren, Joey Batey, Lars Mikkelsen, Royce Pierreson, Maciej Musiał, Wilson Radjou-Pujalte, and Anna Shaffer.
